This one day course has been developed to support teachers and educators wishing to gain confidence in delivering curriculum-linked outdoor learning.
Underpinned by current research, it supports candidates to understand the rationale and approach to outdoor learning providing learners with knowledge and skills to deliver engaging, memorable and effective curriculum-linked learning in the school grounds and wider outdoor environments.
It aims to raise the profile of Outdoor Learning across the school to support whole school improvement.

This course is accredited by the Institute of Outdoor Learning. It is aligned with the Occupational Standard Outdoor Learning Specialist good practice standards, set out by the Institute for Outdoor Learning.
The training is awarded by an established quality-assured local, regional and national subject specific and suitably qualified CPD provider, as identified in the PE and Sport Premium for Primary Schools (Gov.UK, 2024)
The award is aligned with the DfE Standards for Teacher Professional Development (2016).
In line with the DfE PE and Sports Premium specifications, this award provides continuing personal and professional development for staff to ensure that the quality of the teaching and provision, capacity and capability of outdoor learning in your setting is sustainable.
Module 1: an introduction to outdoor learning
1.1 Describe what outdoor learning is (and is not) and the associated benefits of being outdoors.
1.2 Describe the principles and concepts of developing a whole school approach to outdoor learning.
1.3 Describe how to monitor impact and gather evidence
1.4 Observe and support core subject-linked outdoor learning activity with defined outcomes.
1.5 Critically reflect on the delivery of core subject outdoor learning activity
Module 2: developing a wider understanding of outdoor learning
2.1 Reflect on existing policies, practices & resources that support outdoor learning
2.2 Participate in foundation subject activities with defined outcomes
2.3 Critically reflect on the delivery of foundation subject outdoor learning activity
Module 3: demonstrating effective practice
3.1 Determine risk-assessments relating to managing groups and facilitating learning when planning curriculum linked outdoor learning
3.2 Plan or adapt a curriculum-linked activity making effective use of the school grounds (or wider environment) to deliver curriculum objective/s outdoors
3.3 Demonstrate and lead an objective linked activity outdoors
3.3 Critically reflect on own learning
3.4 Course evaluation
Candidates undertake a number of practical observations in line with the purpose of the award, which are assessed by the trainer.
There is the option for candidates develop a portfolio of evidence to record their continuing personal professional development.
IQA ensures that IOL Standards of Good Practice is established and maintained.
Candidates are informed of their result on the day of the training and assessment.
On receipt and processing of the assessment paperwork by the IQA, a certificate will be sent to the candidate.
This course is offered to schools as a one day INSET day.
It is also available to individuals attending CPD training days.
Modules can also be delivered as staff meetings and twilight sessions.
